Behind the Research: How We Work with Communities
Explore our FAQ to understand the roadmap and see how our In-need Assessment Research can support your goals.
This is a structured process to understand the current needs, perceptions, priorities, and challenges of indigenous communities. It’s vital because well-informed, community-led tourism initiatives are more regenerative, equitable, and effective than top-down approaches.
NGOs, tourism developers, governments (national, regional, local), community groups, and social enterprises are welcome to inquire about our approaches and consultancy services. Projects might involve village tourism planning, community tourism, cultural heritage projects, ecotourism development, and/or restoring local benefits from tourism, for example indigenous communities that would like to move away from just being photographed and transition to community tourism based on their stories and skills.
The process may include stakeholder interviews, focus group discussions, surveys, participatory workshops, data analysis, and recommendations. Depending on the location, scope, and logistics, a well-made assessment typically takes anywhere from 2 to 6 months.
We partner with local facilitators—including universities, destination management companies (DMCs), and NGO partners—to implement our research plan on site. These collaborations ensure that our work follows culturally sensitive methods, aligns with indigenous contexts, and builds trust with the community. Our research follows a standard guidance framework that emphasizes participatory engagement, ethical data collection, and transparent interpretation of results. We also share and validate findings with the community to ensure their voices are well-recorded and secured.
You will receive a clear, actionable report with prioritized recommendations, risk/impact assessments, community engagement strategies, regenerative guidelines, and a practical roadmap. We can also present findings to stakeholders and help integrate them into your project plans.
