Our Story
Fair Tourism’s story began in 1989, when it was founded as REISBEWIJS with a simple ambition: to encourage travellers to make choices that respect people, communities, and the environment.
From the outset, we believed that tourism could be more than a way of seeing the world. It could contribute to protecting nature, strengthening local communities, and creating opportunities for generations to come. We brought this vision to life through country days, educational materials, workshops, guest lectures, and an information centre, becoming one of the Netherlands’ early organisations dedicated to sustainable tourism.
In 2004, Charlotte Louwman-Vogels, who had been involved as a volunteer since 2000, decided to carry its work forward. With a new board, she continued Fair Tourism’s mission and has led the organisation ever since, supported by our team and board members.
Today, Fair Tourism continues to champion tourism that puts people and nature at its centre. Our work has evolved alongside the challenges facing destinations and communities, with a growing focus on community-led tourism and indigenous communities taking greater ownership of their stories and development.
Our goal remains the same at heart: to make tourism a force for communities and their cultures.

Mission
We stand for fair tourism because Indigenous cultures, ecosystems, and landscapes deserve respect and care. Indigenous communities deserve to thrive and receive fair benefits from the visitors they welcome, and community based tourism can grow worldwide as a force for good when it is truly fair.
Vision
We envision a future where Indigenous communities are no longer viewed as attractions, but are recognized as leaders in regenerative tourism—fostering equitable opportunities, safeguarding natural and cultural heritage, and advancing the thriveability of their people.
Our Team
Our team is united by the belief that Indigenous culture should remain celebrated and visible. We support one another, stay aligned with our purpose, and focus on creating work that carries meaning and impact.
